The Brazilian is the favourite to be handed the Nerazzurri hot-seat after Benitez rescinded his contract with the Italian giants today.

"I admire Leonardo as a man and a footballer, but I wouldn't know how to judge him as a Coach," Mazzola told Radio Radio.

"As an Interista I just find it hard to comprehend.

"I understand that football has changed, take Zlatan Ibrahimovic for example who has played for Juventus, Inter and Milan in his career, but I wouldn't hire Leonardo. I'd make a different choice."

The former Brazil international has just one season of coaching under his belt, last term's stint with city rivals Milan.

Meanwhile, turning to Benitez, Mazzola insists that the Spaniard misjudged the game on the peninsula.

"I think Benitez is a good Coach, but he didn't understand what world he had come to – a different one from English football.

"Had he said the things he did a couple of days later to the President then he would have been right, but it was wrong to make those statements publicly."

Benitez's decision to issue the club with a 'back me or sack me' ultimatum is widely seen as the primary reason why he is no longer in charge at San Siro.
