Romelu Lukaku will have his Inter medical on Wednesday after exchanging documents with Chelsea and Nerazzurri legend Sandro Mazzola believes his desperation to return is ‘something never seen before in football.’

The Belgium international spent two years at San Siro and won the Serie A title under Antonio Conte, but pushed for a €113m transfer to Chelsea last summer when the coach also moved on.

He immediately regretted the decision and took a 35 per cent pay cut to force through a comeback on loan, at a cost of €8m plus bonuses.

According to reports, the two clubs exchanged documents today, so they are all set for a medical on Wednesday morning.

“I really like Lukaku, it’s wonderful that he showed so much desire to come back,” Inter legend Mazzola told FCinter1908.it.

Not all the fans are happy, as the ultras warned they will not greet him at the airport or give him a big fanfare, still hurt that he left in the first place.

“I understand some might struggle to welcome him back with enthusiasm, seeing what happened last year, but this is something never seen before in football.

“He needs to earn the affection back, working just as hard as he did the first year at Inter, so let’s give him the possibility to do that.”

It is a different coach at the helm, as Simone Inzaghi uses a similar 3-5-2 formation, but with less of a focus on defend and counter that Conte had.

“I think he will do very well with Inzaghi. He can still make the difference in Serie A and at the end of the day the only thing that really matters is that Inter win,” added Mazzola.

Lukaku is already in Italy, as he is currently having his vacation off the coast of Sardinia, so it won’t be a long journey to Milan.

  1. No more words on the story please, we’ll get back into this after goal number 20. And I’m talking first half of the coming season! 😉
