The former Napoli Coach’s position on the San Siro bench has come under heavy scrutiny in recent weeks, with the Nerazzurri in ninth place in Serie A, and fans whistling the Coach after a run of poor results.
Mazzarri has received the public backing of Inter President Erick Thohir on a number of occasions, but now Corriere dello Sport claims that the Indonesian tycoon’s patience is wearing thin.
The newspaper believes that Mazzarri has been told he must take at least six points from the fixtures with Milan, Roma and Udinese, but also states that a loss to their city rivals would almost certainly spell the end of the 53-year-old’s time on the Inter bench.
Should Thohir decide to dismiss the current Coach, there are believed to be a number of options being considered by the Beneamata.
Former Coach Roberto Mancini would apparently be popular with fans, as his previous spell in charge saw three Serie A titles arrive in the Nerazzurri trophy cabinet.
However, the former Manchester City tactician is seen as an expensive option, with cheaper options such as Alberto Zaccheroni, Clarence Seedorf and Leonardo being considered as well as Stefano Vecchi the club’s youth team Coach and club legend Walter Zenga.
Should Mazzarri survive until the end of the season, but fail to qualify for Europe, the tactician would reportedly be dismissed in the close-season.
The Corriere dello Sport states that in such an eventuality Sinisa Mihajlovic of Sampdoria would become the front-runner for the job, ahead of Everton’s Roberto Martinez.
Mihajlovic cannot be considered at present, as League rules prevent a Coach from being employed by more than one Serie A club in the same season, while Martinez is unlikely to leave Everton mid-season.
