Juventus director general Beppe Marotta reveals why they allowed Giampaolo Pazzini to slip through their fingers.

They had been heavily linked with the ex-Sampdoria striker, but saw him complete the transfer to Inter for €12m plus Jonathan Biabiany.

“I have a rapport of great affection and professional respect with Pazzini,” noted Marotta, who was in charge of Samp last season.

“Inter made a very quick swoop and above all a large investment. We were not in the condition to make that economic sacrifice.”

Andrea Barzagli has arrived from Wolfsburg for just €300,000 and Luca Toni picked up an injury in his second game after the move from Genoa.

“This is a year of great economic difficulty for the club and there will be a consistent loss. Unfortunately we have been unlucky with so many injuries to the forwards.

“We can rule out a headline-grabbing January buy, even if we remain vigilant on the market for other options. We do intend to take up our options on Fabio Quagliarella and Alberto Aquilani, but the price-tags are negotiable.”

This week's exit from the Coppa Italia means there probably won't be any silverware this season and fans are turning on Coach Gigi Del Neri.

“We have a squad with a tactician who deserves our confidence. We started a renewal process with many players and knew full well this would be a season of laying the foundations,” assured Marotta.

Milan, Inter and Roma all took time to find their form. We know that our quality level is not exceptional, but we will improve and above all have a great work ethic.”
