Paolo Maldini explains how Milan are progressing gradually up the levels with a maturing squad and are prepared for Dinamo Zagreb, but Champions League qualification is ‘almost a mathematical calculation’ based on revenue.

It kicks off at 17.45 UK time (16.45 GMT).

These sides have met four times before in Europe and Milan won all four of them, including two with Maldini on the field.

“I watched a replay of the game we won 3-1 here against Dinamo Zagreb. I remember the start, but absolutely nothing about the game. I must be getting old!” Maldini told Sky Sport Italia.

During the Champions League draw, Maldini said that Milan were not yet in a position to dream about the Final.

“The question was specifically at the time on this season’s Final, so I said it was rather ahead of schedule, but that it is our duty to dream. Milan are a team that the other clubs don’t want to face, even if the level of investment in the very top Champions League sides is not something we can compete with.

“It is a journey, we are doing it pretty quickly, but it’s all about what happens on the pitch. If we do well, then we must be ready.”

It has been said that Milan have the most ‘European’ identity of the Italian sides in Europe this season, not to mention the boost of winning the Scudetto last term, so their next step is to make their mark in the Champions League.

“It’s more complicated because the quality level rises. Compared to last season, we have more belief, some of our players have matured a year and it makes a big difference from 21 to 22.

“I am very happy with our transfer strategy. Of course, objectives can change, as there are financial restraints you cannot go beyond, but I believe this squad is stronger than last season.”

Fans remain anxious to know when Milan will be able to negotiate a new contract for star man Rafael Leao, who will be suspended against Napoli this weekend.

“We already started talking a long time ago, with Rafa, Bennacer and Kalulu. I always believe that what the player wants counts for a lot in these situations.

“Milan’s possibilities this season and probably the next will be increased because the revenue will increase and in turn that gives more resources to the team.

“It’s almost a mathematical calculation now working out who will progress in the Champions League, as out of 16 teams qualified for the Round of 16, they included the 14 clubs in the tournament with the highest revenue.

“Having said that, we must always dream, otherwise I wouldn’t be here knowing all we’ve achieved with these club colours.”
