Real Madrid and Napoli are reportedly battling it out to sign Inter striker Mauro Icardi.

According to Tancredi Palmeri in his column for Tuttomercatoweb, Madrid reached out to Icardi’s camp on Monday – at the same time as Zinedine Zidane’s return.

The journalist explains Los Blancos’ contact was ‘much deeper than in the past’ and that they are prepared to improve on Napoli’s offer of €9m a season plus €2m in bonuses.

However, Juventus’ interest would have ‘intensified markedly’ in the last few days, keeping them in the running. 

In the meantime, Corriere dello Sport writes Inter could drop the Argentine for the rest of the season.

Suning Group has previous in the case of Brazilian midfielder Ramires, who has not played for sister club Jiangsu Suning since being frozen out last year.

The newspaper adds President Steven Zhang ‘doesn’t want to intervene’, instead ‘leaving everything in the hands’ of general manager Beppe Marotta.

Furthermore, the Nerazzurri would have already decided to sign ‘another big-name striker’ in the summer to replace the 26-year-old.

Icardi’s agent-wife Wanda Nara, meanwhile, will receive the Socrates Award for freedom of expression in Milan on Wednesday.
