“If you take away Juventus, Milan and Inter, then Lazio have won more than any other club in Italy. You can take that as a snipe at Roma, but all you have to do is count the trophies. Maybe someone’s got an extra Fairs Cup.”
The fact the Stadio della Roma has been progressing with help from Mayor of Rome Virginia Raggi infuriated Lazio, who publicly demanded equal treatment.
“I am fed up of being the pioneer, so this time I’m letting others go first. I’ll just say that if a principle stands, it must be the same for everyone.
“If the council allows one of the two clubs in the city to build a stadium, they must do it with the other too. If the stadium is right on the Tiber river, then there can’t be any problems building one further out.”
Lotito was particularly cutting when it came to discussing referees, as Lazio have repeatedly criticised the officials, even with the introduction of VAR.
“Referees cost us €40m last season, because we didn’t get into the Champions League. I love the romance of football, but nowadays there are too many special interests involved.
“To err is human, to persevere is diabolical. You can make a mistake two, three times, but if the errors are recurring, then I have to understand what’s going on. I don’t believe in coincidences.”
