After Lazio sealed a 3-2 victory over Cremonese at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday afternoon, Milan can no longer qualify for the 2024 edition of the Supercoppa Italiana, as they are now mathematically unable to catch Maurizio Sarri’s side, who have moved back up to second in the table on 71 points.

Milan, who still have to play Juventus on Sunday evening before the final round of Serie A fixtures next weekend, are now seven points behind the Biancocelesti with two games left in their schedule.

With a new Supercoppa format coming into play for 2024, the runner-up in Serie A will also take part in a four-team competition taking place in Saudi Arabia, along with the league champions as well as the two finalists from the Coppa Italia.

Previously, the Supercoppa had been a one-off game between the Serie A title winners and the Coppa Italia holders, but from next season onwards, the format will expand, which is also predicted to increase the financial revenues for the teams involved.

Lazio, currently in second place in the league table, can still technically finish the season in third if they lose away to Empoli and Inter beat Torino on the final day.

However, after the Nerazzurri’s success in the Coppa Italia last Wednesday, the four participants in next year’s Supercoppa have now been confirmed as Napoli, Inter, Lazio and Fiorentina.
