Mateo Kovacic prepares to face Italy for Croatia and talks about his Inter future. “You never know in football.”

The midfielder is expected to start Friday’s Euro 2016 qualifier in Split, which is between the top two teams in the group.

“Playing behind closed doors will certainly be an advantage for Italy, but we must play our game anyway,” Kovacic told Sky Sport Italia.

He hopes to build on confidence brought by Ivan Rakitic, who scored in the Champions League Final when Barcelona beat Juventus 3-1.

He hopes to build on confidence brought by Ivan Rakitic, who scored in the Champions League Final when Barcelona beat Juventus 3-1.

“We are happy for him and in this instance I speak as a Croatian, not as an Inter player… He is ready to face Italy and we hope he’ll score another goal past Gigi Buffon.”

Inter have been linked with Ivan Perisic of Wolfsburg, so he’d increase the Croatian contingent at San Siro.

“He is a great player and would be a bonus for any team, not just Inter. If he arrived in Milan then I would be very happy. If there’s something in the story, I’m sure we’ll talk about it.”

As for Kovacic, Coach Roberto Mancini assured he will be staying with the Nerazzurri despite an offer from Liverpool.

“I signed a contract to 2019, but you never know in football. At this moment I can say that I am 100 per cent staying.”
