Serie A returns on Wednesday and a look at the history books suggests Inter, Juventus and Atalanta are expecting to continue their unbeaten starts to a new calendar year.

The league has been on hiatus since early November to make way for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which was won by Argentina.

Italian football finally gets back in action with all 10 of the Week 16 fixtures being played on Wednesday January 4.

The biggest game is no doubt between Inter and runaway leaders Napoli, so Simone Inzaghi can only hope that the Nerazzurri continue their general trend of starting the new year with a positive result.

Inter are unbeaten in their annual opener since 2014 and have won the last three.

Juventus see their positive streak stretching back even further to 2013, which is the last time they lost the first game of the calendar year.

Atalanta have not lost the opening fixture of the year since 2016 and won each of their last seven openers in January.

Milan too are without an early January defeat since 2016, but were held to a draw most recently in 2020.
