According to news agency ANSA, one of the Juventus directors accused of financial irregularities told another ‘this is as bad as Calciopoli.’

The entire Board of Directors resigned en masse on Monday evening and an investigation was opened into the payment of wages to players, reportedly under the table to get them off the official balance sheet.

ANSA claim the police investigation includes a wiretapped phone call between two directors on July 22, 2021.

“We’ve only seen a situation this bad during Calciopoli.”

That 2006 scandal into the undue influence over the assignation of referees to various games ultimately saw Juventus stripped of two Serie A titles and demoted to Serie B.

Other clubs including Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio and Reggina were also penalised with docked points.

Because Juve are floated on the stock exchange, they could face repercussions beyond merely the sporting arenas, especially if they are found to have lied to investors about the state of their finances.

  1. The degree of ‘wiretapping’ of phones in Italy is most peculiar. It is disturbing that this level of state/private(?) surveillance is accepted so easily

  2. Yes @Keeffo they should be left alone to cheat in peace. How dare they gather evidence of their corruption!

  3. What is the big surprise. The beginners of Europe have been doing this under the cover of darkness since 1897 but at least it has not translated into European success at least not post dial up connection era.
