The Italian is emerging from his first defeat in several months, albeit at the hands of his former club Milan in a winter break friendly this week.

Even so, the 55-year-old is optimistic with regards to Italian football, as he has explained in discussing former club Juve’s hopes in the Champions League this season.

“They are a great team and they proved that last season in the two matches against us, in the group stage,” said the multiple Champions League winner to Tuttosport.

“Their team were able to stand up to us in the first and the second round. If the younger players capitalise on this experience, the Bianconeri can consider themselves a candidate for the ultimate victory.

“Juventus can stand up to us, to Bayern [Munich] and to Chelsea. Their historical core is composed of the World Champions and world-class foreigners, that is to say, players with great international experience.

“They're just short of a dash of maturity in the younger players.”

Ancelotti was also asked whether he supported anyone in the current two-horse race for the Scudetto.

“Between Juventus and Roma I just wish for the best team to win. I've got a bond with all the teams I coached and played for.

“My defeat against Milan was painless. After a week of holiday a game like this was necessary to get our rhythm back. Physically we held together.

“Milan played well and we didn't. But this doesn't spoil all the good things we did over 2014. We're very happy to have finished a fantastic year.”
