Marco Materazzi claims Juventus are ‘obsessed’ with winning the Champions League and that ‘it’ll be a failure’ if they do not with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Juve’s €112m deal for Ronaldo last summer was widely considered a statement of intent by the Bianconeri to end their 23-year wait for the Champions League.

However, Materazzi – who won Europe’s elite club competition with Inter in 2010 – told Eurosport: “Juventus are a Champions League team and they have the obsession of winning it every season.

“When you win a lot in Italy you always want to take the next step, and that step forward in this case is the Champions League.

“Last summer they signed a player who can’t be compared to anyone else in the Champions League. I think it’s their main target.

“It’s difficult for someone to take the title away from them because they’re the best equipped and most organised team, who have won together and played together for many years.

“Ronaldo has to do his bit. The problem will be if they don’t win it because if they don’t, it’ll be a failure.

“It’s normal that you’re expected to win the Champions League after you buy the player who together with Messi is the best in the world, but only one team can win it..

“However, as an Inter fan I can’t support Juventus; if they win it then I’ll complement them as an Italian, but I’d never cheer for them.”
