Simone Inzaghi said the 3-0 victory over arch rivals Roma “will remain in Lazio history” and secure their status in the race for Europe.

Felipe Caicedo opened the scoring after just 12 minutes, with Ciro Immobile converting a penalty and Danilo Cataldi adding a third late on.

“This meant a lot to us and the victory can give us so much enthusiasm going forward,” the Coach told DAZN.

“We had just three-and-a-half days to prepare for this, but the lads did such a good job. We’re happy to have given such a wonderful evening to our fans, as nights like this remain in Lazio history.”

Inzaghi was forced to reshuffle when Immobile failed a fitness test this morning, although the striker was able to come on as a substitute for the final half-hour and converted a penalty.

“I had some doubts about the line-up, as Immobile was not at 100 per cent and it was not an easy decision to leave him out. Marco Parolo had a swollen ankle too, so I had some tough choices to make.

“Those who played deserve a lot of praise, as everyone from Caicedo to the midfielders and defenders did so well.”

Despite the injury crisis and Europa League exit, Lazio arguably had the better of the midweek Coppa Italia semi-final draw with Milan too.

“We proved with Milan and Roma that we played better and deserved our results. It’s a pity we dropped a few points lately with the injuries piling up, as if we’d had other options even to rotate the squad during busy weeks, we could’ve been higher up the table.

“The fact remains, Lazio can cause every opponent trouble and we’ll fight it out to the end if we always go out there with this conviction and this heart.

“Today is my mother’s birthday and I don’t think I could’ve given her a better gift than this victory.”
