“That contributed to the irritation and tempers flaring, but everything is fine now. We could’ve done better, but nothing can take away what a great season these players have had. We left behind Napoli, Milan and Roma, teams that were equipped to aim higher.
“The biggest regret is the week we went to Bergamo against Atalanta. We were missing six or seven players, of which five would’ve been starting the match. It’s natural that is going to cause some problems.
“We had taken the lead, but just as we were starting to struggle, there was nobody I could bring off the bench to change gear.”
Lazio will have to wait before guaranteeing they are in the Champions League, because there is still the very remote possibility that if Napoli win the Champions League and Roma win the Europa League, fourth place in Serie A would only be valid for a Europa League spot.
“Now we’ll take some rest, try to improve the squad where we can and try to start the next season on the right foot in Serie A and the Champions League.
“We had started to find our form again lately and had three consecutive victories because we finally had almost a full squad to choose from. We held out well in the first half against Napoli, but shouldn’t have given away that penalty, it wasn’t the right mentality after the break.”
