“I learned this afternoon that I would not be keeping the job,” added Zenga in his press conference and on Sky.

“I think that I brought passion and professionalism. It is the right of any President to choose who he wants to be the coach, and if he made this decision on me, he will have had his reasons.

“I know that I couldn’t have done any more. Perhaps I made a mistake in taking the job in the first place, a contract until June with an impossible clause. The clause was that I had to get seventh place or it would not be renewed.

“I realised even at the time it was ill-judged, but you get swept up in the challenge and it’s still an experience I have learned from.”
