La Gazzetta dello Sport deputy editor Andrea Di Caro had harsh words for Simone Inzaghi and Inter after their Derby d’Italia defeat to Juventus, calling it ‘the rotten icing on the spoiled cake’.

The Nerazzurri were unable to take advantage of their on-pitch dominance in the Derby d’Italia, suffering a frustrating 1-0 defeat despite seeing far more of the ball and playing over 300 passes more than the Bianconeri.

The goal itself, scored by Filip Kostic, was marred in controversy as debates erupted regarding Adrien Rabiot’s possible hand ball in the build-up. Red cards were shown to Leandro Paredes and Danilo D’Ambrosio in the dying minutes of the match, a sign of the fiery nature of the derby.

Writing in La Gazzetta dello Sport, Di Caro underlined his disappointment with Inter and their failure to convert their dominance to victory.

“The rotten icing on the spoiled Inter cake in the league was put on last night, ninth defeat, third at home, and what’s more against Juve.

“On the eve of the match, Inzaghi had sniped at Allegri, who considered himself virtually second with 53 points. After yesterday’s game there are no more arguments.

“Inter’s gap from Napoli is more and more humiliating. The passage of the round with Porto was certainly a great result, but Inzaghi celebrating himself and the group at the end of the match appeared to many too emphatic. Since last night those words appear even more exaggerated.”

Inter now sit third in the Serie A table, just three points ahead of fifth place Roma.
