Massimo Moratti urges Inter to raise Mauro Icardi’s €110m release clause as “we can’t spend every summer worrying”.

The Nerazzurri captain only signed a new contract last year, but the release clause in his deal isn’t as big a deterrent in the current market, especially for a striker with 16 goals in 15 games so far this season.

“Mauro has always had vision, it’s only now he’s putting it into practice,” former Beneamata President Moratti explained to Gazzetta dello Sport.

“He puts himself about like crazy and still has enough energy to score.

“His release clause? The club will evaluate it, but I think it needs to be raised. It’s true that he wants to stay at Inter, but we can’t spend every summer worrrying…”

Another player who has been linked with an exit is Milan Skriniar, with rumours some of Europe’s giants are looking at him…

“I can believe it, but we’re Inter! The Slovak is fantastic and I think the directors did very well to choose him, they saw he’s strong and complete.

“Ivan Perisic? He’s very strong, he has physicality and class. If he keeps up this level of consistency I don’t see many stronger than him in Europe.

“The club did very well not to sell him in the summer, and here too [Coach Luciano] Spalletti had his effect.”

While Inter are top of the table, city rivals Milan are languishing in mid-table and drew with bottom side Benevento at the weekend.

“I thought it wouldn’t be easy for them, having changed 10 out of 11 of their team,” Moratti said.

“I didn’t think they’d have so many problems though, and in Benevento they had one of those classic days where you shouldn’t even get out of bed, not least because the goalkeeper scoring took those images around the world.

“Now they’re 18 points behind us and I’d be lying if I said I was sorry about that!”
