Inter defender Stefan de Vrij has suffered a muscle injury while on international duty with the Netherlands and could miss the next Serie A match against Empoli.

Calciomercato.com reports De Vrij suffered a minor muscle injury during a training session with the Netherlands national team on Thursday. According to the report, it should be a muscle overstretching which could keep the experienced defender out of action for at least two weeks.

Inter’s medical staff are in touch with their Dutch colleagues and will soon assess the former Lazio defender.

Inter host Empoli at San Siro on April 1 after the break and Simone Inzaghi will be short of options in defence against the Tuscans if De Vrij can’t recover and Francesco Acerbi is banned following alleged racist insults towards Juan Jesus.

If both defenders are out of action against Empoli, then Alessandro Bastoni or Yann-Aurel Bisseck will play in the middle of a three-man defence when the season resumes.

The sports judge is expected to give his verdict on the Acerbi case next week.
