It is now practically impossible for Napoli to qualify for the Champions League, but the relegation battle is shaken up this weekend.

The Partenopei knew it was going to be tough regardless to secure a top five Serie A finish, though today’s shock 1-0 defeat at Empoli seems to have slammed the door shut.

They are now on 49 points after 33 rounds, already six adrift of a Roma side with two games in hand, and fall three points behind Lazio in sixth.

That Empoli victory also has a knock-on effect for the relegation tussle, which is increasingly tight.

The Tuscans were already one point clear of the bottom three and are now on 31 points from 33 games.

It is the same tally as Hellas Verona, who snatched a last-gasp 1-0 win over fellow strugglers Udinese.

Although they have a game in hand, needing to complete the match that was suspended with Roma at 1-1, the Friulani could be dragged back into the drop zone if Frosinone or Sassuolo win their Week 33 fixtures on Sunday.

Cagliari had already taken themselves to 32 points with a 2-2 draw against Juventus.
