San Raffaele hospital has provided an update on the condition of Monza president Silvio Berlusconi, who is currently dealing with pneumonia and leukaemia.

The 86-year-old Italian businessman was taken into hospital yesterday with breathing difficulties and cardiovascular problems, which were diagnosed to be pneumonia as a result of his leukaemia.

Berlusconi, who has had a number of health scares in recent years, has now started a round of chemotherapy and is in a stable condition.

San Raffaele hospital released a statement today via ANSA, discussing Berlusconi’s condition in detail.

“President Silvio Berlusconi is currently in intensive care for the treatment of a pulmonary infection.

“The infectious event is part of a chronic haematological condition of which he has been a carrier for some time: chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia, the persistent chronic phase of which has been ascertained and the absence of evolutionary features in acute leukaemia.

“The current therapeutic strategy involves treating the pulmonary infection, specialised cytoreductive treatment aimed at limiting the negative effects of the pathological hyperleukocytosis and restoring the pre-existing clinical conditions.”

The former Milan president underwent open heart surgery in 2016 to replace his aortic valve and was hospitalised last week for medical checks, which is when his leukaemia was reportedly diagnosed.

The 86-year-old Berlusconi is still active in the world of football, having purchased Monza in 2018. Since his arrival, they’ve flown up from Serie C to Serie A, entering the topflight for the first time in their history, and look set to avoid dropping back down to the second tier.
