“I still want to win the league, and I have some personal objectives – starts, goals in a game,” Hamsik told sport.aktuality.sk.

“I’m focused on Napoli, we’re aiming for the Scudetto and it would be the fulfilment of one of my dreams.

“The points gap? It’s not pleasant, but there’s certainly no need to panic. We’ve dropped points, but Juventus can drop points.

“There’s still a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season, there will be matches where Juventus could drop points.

“They’re playing away at Roma, away at Milan and against [Milan] Skriniar’s Inter at home.

“Of course, our head-to-head game will also tell us a lot.”

Hamsik was also asked about his longevity with the club.

“I’ve been at the club for 11 years, and in modern football it’s not natural for a player to last for so long.

“The captaincy is also about loyalty to the club and the Neapolitan fans. Of course it’s also about responsibilities.

“My highlight of 2017? Breaking Diego Maradona’s goal record. It was a great milestone for me, but also for Napoli.

“It hadn’t happened to anyone for many years, and I’m glad it went the right way for me.”

The midfielder has won the Slovak Footballer of the Year Award for a record seventh time.

“I’m glad I managed to defend it, but I must say that the young lads – Milan Skriniar and Stano Lobotka – had excellent seasons,” Hamsik said.

“I’m glad to have defended it, we’ll see what happens next year. It’s a prestigious award, and I’m very honoured to have won it so many times.

“It's hard to win and even harder to defend. I hope I can hold on to my health. When a man is healthy, he has a chance.

“Who can challenge me? Milan Skriniar and Stano Lobotka. Milan has been putting in fantastic performances in Serie A for the second year in a row. The big clubs are interested in him.

“Stano has shown great strength in six months in La Liga. I just hope these guys will play and show  themselves in the best light.”
