The agent who took Sebastian Giovinco to Toronto FC believes the reports of a contract worth €15m per season including bonuses to Lorenzo Insigne is ‘impossible, it seems like a misdirection to get a better deal out of Napoli.’

Multiple sources in Italy, Canada and America all maintain Insigne is ready to accept a free transfer to the MLS club, signing a five-year contract worth €11.5m per season plus another €4.5m in various bonuses.

It would make him the highest-paid Italian player in the world and follow in the footsteps of former Toronto FC fan favourite Giovinco.

However, Sportitalia transfer pundit Alfredo Pedullà remains sceptical on the agreement and believes Insigne is trying to use that interest to generate a more suitable move, or even a better offer of a contract extension from his beloved hometown club Napoli.

‘Why are you doing it?’ Twitter reacts as Insigne makes Toronto decision

The same idea has come to Andrea D’Amico, the agent who negotiated Giovinco’s original move to Toronto FC in 2015.

“It’s difficult to comment on the Insigne situation, because to me it seems like a misdirection to get a better deal out of Napoli,” D’Amico told Radio Punto Nuovo.

“The idea of almost €15m per season is impossible, in my view it’s only a rumour. MLS is to be considered a serious option for Insigne, because I believe it will become an increasingly important league.

“We have to get used to a transfer market without borders, because what counts for a player now is his contract, his position on the pitch, lifestyle choices. The World Cup will be in America and Canada in 2026, so they have the infrastructure.”

  1. Let him go. We will see how he enjoys Toronto. Plenty of young wingers that Napoli can sign. And he can give up his Azzurri career. MLS is still an inferior league. And they will end up being like Inter and Juve and Milan who can’t pay their bills.

  2. MLS is worse than scottish league and there are womens european clubs playing better football than the MLS.

  3. I can understand the hard feelings about an Italian legend making the move to Toronto. But get your facts straight MLS has improved greatly in the last decade. Toronto FC is a solid club that takes care of its fans and players. Napoli will regret treating its players like this and as an Azzurri fan I feel the team keeps making mistakes ignoring Italian talent who don’t play close to home. I hope he moves to Toronto he deserves it.

  4. Villarusso,

Seriously, man. You don’t know MLS salary structure (I barely know it and I know the league fairly well).

Bell Media/ Rogers Media. They have money. Lots of it. All MLS teams do. MLS is a racket (literally). Insigne’s salary is equal that of 1 NBA player they employ.

  5. I am one of those that in the early part of Insigne career thought that he indeed was an Iniesta in the making (that is without the diving, antics) however Insigne has not been consistent even though at Euro he did the goal of the year. When asked is that the goal of the year, yes it is. Can we see more like that. Well that is the goal of the year, meaning all we get is that 1 singly goal of the yr with Belgium.

So if he does go to TO Mancio will most likely not call him up and this is actually a Godsend as he is not performing well at National team level. Sorry but we have to win the playoffs and every player has to be a cracker of a shot. No margin of errors like this Dybala fiasco now at Juv.
