Sampdoria Coach Marco Giampaolo is reportedly Milan’s ‘first choice’ to replace Gennaro Gattuso, but President Massimo Ferrero is reluctant to release him.

According to reporter Matteo Pedrosi, the 51-year-old is the Rossoneri’s favourite to take control of the dugout at San Siro and contact has already been made between the club and the tactician.

Earlier in the week it was reported that if current sports strategy and development director Paolo Maldini accepts the new role of Milan technical director, he would make the Blucerchiati Coach his number one target.

Simone Inzaghi remains on the list of potential candidates to replace Gattuso, but is also linked with the Juventus job.

However, he could also possibly remain at Lazio.

Sassuolo Coach Roberto De Zerbi is further down the line of options.

Meanwhile, La Repubblica and La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Giampaolo, who has one year left on his current contract, considers his time at Marassi to be over and has informed President Ferrero and sporting director Carlo Osti of his decision.

The paper also reports that the President is reluctant to let his Coach go and offered him a new three-year contract running until 2022, asking the technician to take a week off to reflect on his future.

La Gazzetta claims Giampaolo is waiting for offers from Milan or Bologna, should Sinisa Mihajlovic move on to Roma.
