Emiliano Viviano parried an Alessandro Florenzi penalty before an 80th-minute Duvan Zapata tap-in.

“It was a victory for the whole team, for those who haven’t played as much this season and made sure they were ready when called upon,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

Roma are a strong side and especially on their home turf, when they are swept up by the enthusiasm of the crowd. We used up a lot of energy in the first half and inevitably would run out of steam a little towards the end and come under pressure, but we held out and got the win.

“There were 20 minutes when we were under serious pressure, but everyone worked so hard off the ball and held out against a side with excellent individual qualities.

“I certainly didn’t think I’d come to Rome and not suffer at all.”

This result means Sampdoria are only four points behind fifth-placed Roma and still three clear of Milan.

“I’ve said for a few weeks now that the objective for Sampdoria is to enjoy its football. Every time we mention some other target, we end up playing badly, thinking of the result more than the performance, and that is no good.

“If you don’t play well, you don’t get points, so our only focus must be to play good football.”
