The former midfielder replaced the sacked Vincenzo Montella late last year and guided the Rosssoneri to a sixth place Serie A finish.

However, speculation has grown in the last week that Antonio Conte is waiting in the wings to take over at San Siro.

And Gazzetta dello Sport is reporting this morning that new club President Scaroni had to call Gattuso, who is currently on Milan’s pre-season tour in the United States, to provide him with a vote of confidence that his job is not under threat.

“This story makes me laugh,” Gattuso said of the rumours after Milan were beaten 9-8 on penalties by Manchester United.

“I am relaxed, I am pleased that the President called me. But I find peace from the work I do every day.

“I’m not going to fix anything if it isn’t broken yet.”

In another summer of upheaval at San Siro, Leonardo was officially confirmed as the Milan’s new general manager yesterday evening.

And Gattuso admitted that although he has not always seen eye-to-eye with the new appointment, the priority is the well-being of the club.

“I have had him as a teammate, a Coach and a director. I have great respect for him.

“We did have some problems in the past, but we cleared it up a couple of years ago.

“At this moment the priority isn’t our relationship. It is to take Milan to a high level.”
