Milan Coach Gennaro Gattuso admits his side’s performance in their 1-1 draw with Manchester United was better than he was expecting.

The Rossoneri eventually lost 9-8 in a penalty shootout against Jose Mourinho’s team in their first match of the International Champions Cup.

However, they put in a respectable showing against the English Premier League team, with Suso equalising after Alexis Sanchez had put the Red Devils ahead.

“I was expecting less, I’m happy with the performance,” Gattuso commented post-match.

However, they put in a respectable showing against the English Premier League team, with Suso equalising after Alexis Sanchez had put the Red Devils ahead.

“I was expecting less, I’m happy with the performance,” Gattuso commented post-match.

“I liked the mentality of the young players. We often started to play out from the back. I am very satisfied.

“I liked almost everything. United were missing some important players, but we are young and need to continue on like this.

“We were certainly helped by the absence of some United players.”

Gattuso was asked about goalkeeper Pepe Reina, who featured in the second half of last night’s match but has been linked with a move to Chelsea.

“He has great experience. He can give us a lot both on and off the pitch.

“Gigio [Donnarumma] did well too today. We have a lot of matches, now we will see if things stay like this or whether we’ll find another solution.”

The Milan boss sees the benefits of the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus.

“His arrival in our football is very important. It’s been some years since one of the best players in the world came to Italy."
