“We always had a great relationship, Berlusconi was my doping,” Gattuso told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“When he came to Milanello, he gathered us together and fired us up incredibly. I’ll never forget his speech before the Manchester [Champions League] final against Juventus.

“Berlusconi has incredible charisma, he communicates through his words, but also in the way he says them. He was interested in us, he knew everything and I never understood who told him these things.

“If I had a problem, he’d arrive at Milanello and ask if I’d solved it. I was speechless. I like to look people in the eye, but occasionally I had to drop my gaze.

“A gift for this 80th? Good health, just that. The rest is up to him.

“That said, I have an idea: if he wants, Berlusconi can come to Pisa and be my assistant. He’s help on the pitch and he’d be a great motivator in the dressing room.

“Do you think he’ll come?”
