Gian Piero Gasperini blamed the red card for Genoa’s 1-0 defeat to Roma. “It ruined the game.”

Mattia Perin was sent off after just 30 minutes for giving away a penalty on Radja Nainggolan, so the Grifone had to play the rest of the tie with 10 men.

“I am truly disappointed with the way the match went. It’s possible to lose against Roma, but playing three quarters of the game with 10 men really weighed on us,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“I am truly disappointed with the way the match went. It’s possible to lose against Roma, but playing three quarters of the game with 10 men really weighed on us,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“I was sent off at half-time, but I thought the referee Banti was more agitated than me. I merely pointed out the penalty and the goal after a Ljajic dive were unlucky incidents for us.”

Perin was judged to have ended a clear scoring opportunity, but there were two Genoa players between Nainggolan and the goal.

“The real difference now is made by interpretations, as I’ve seen different interpretations of the same incidents. I say when it’s 10 against 11, that is a different game.

“It ruined the match and I insist we would’ve had the energy to cause Roma many more problems if we had all 11 men on the pitch. We stayed in the game and threatened an equaliser right at the end.

“That red card on the penalty incident did not seem to me a clear scoring opportunity. The problem is the lack of consistency throughout the season. This is why you can have replays during the game and still not work this out, because it’s an issue of interpretation.”

Genoa lost after more than two months and are caught in third place by Lazio and Sampdoria, but Gasperini sees the glass half-full.

“We emerge more convinced of our capabilities after this match. When facing a big club head-to-head, we can see the steps forward we’ve made in recent months.”
