Monza CEO Adriano Galliani opened up about his passionate celebration for his team’s last minute equaliser against Inter.

The 78-year-old Italian businessman previously spent 31 years working for Milan alongside long-time collaborator Silvio Berlusconi, who now owns Monza. The pair closely followed the work of their team, who flew up the divisions following the takeover in 2018, and they guided the club to the topflight for the first time in their history.

Denzel Dumfries’ last minute own goal in Monza’s clash with Inter allowed the newly promoted side to snatch a point in dramatic style. After the goal, a video went viral showing Galliani and his unbridled joy for the equaliser.

Speaking to Corriere della Sera, Galliani discussed his passionate celebration and why he reacted that way.

“My celebration is that of a child who seventy years ago used to go with his mother to the stadium to see Monza. When his team arrives in Serie A after 110 years since their foundation and, for the first time in history, faces Inter by drawing in the 92nd minute, well, he goes crazy with joy.”

The Monza CEO then clarified that he did not insult Inter whilst loudly shouting in celebration.

“I don’t remember what I said, I was in a trance. But I want to clarify something, there was nothing against Inter in my unhinged shouts, I have always cultivated very good relations with Marotta, Ausilio and Baccin.

“You have to understand that until 2017 Monza’s derbies were with Renate, now instead we host Inter in front of 14,000. Unthinkable when we bought the club, at the beginning 200 came to see us.

“When we drew on Saturday, I thought I was dreaming, I was incredulous. But no, I repeated…Of course I spoke to President Berlusconi, he was overjoyed too.”

Berlusconi’s 33-year-old partner Marta Fascina sparked controversy after swearing at Inter fans on her Instagram story following the match.
