Milan full back Alessandro Florenzi missed a large part of this season with a hamstring injury and revealed he considered retiring during his time on the sidelines.

The 32-year-old Italian played his part in the Rossoneri’s Scudetto success whilst on loan from Roma last season, earning a permanent move to the Lombardy capital.

Florenzi picked up from where he left off this campaign, but was almost immediately sidelined after suffering a hamstring injury in the dying minutes of a 0-0 draw with Sassuolo back in August. The 32-year-old has only made one appearance since, playing 13 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Salernitana earlier this month.

Speaking to Sport Mediaset, Florenzi discussed the mental difficulties he experienced whilst recovering from his hamstring injury.

“There was a small moment when I thought about looking for other roads during these months. But luckily my family made me think hard about what I wanted, and the truth is that when I saw the ball again all those thoughts went away.”

The former Roma full back then commented on his recovery and current condition.

“I’m happy to be back, this break was a godsend for me. I was able to continue working but I did it on the pitch with my teammates. I’ve grown physically and athletically and now I feel ready to help the team even more.”

Last season, Florenzi made 30 appearances across all competitions for Milan, for a total of 1418 minutes. In that time, he scored two goals.
