Alessandro Florenzi asked fans to help get Roma through this “bad spell, but we mustn’t make a drama out of it.”

The home-grown attacking midfielder gave an interview to Roma TV after a series of disappointing team performances, which saw them fall five points behind Serie A leaders Juventus.

“It’s seen as a bad spell, but we mustn’t make a drama out of it. We have 41 points, are in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals and want to go as far as possible in the Europa League,” he told supporters.

“We played badly recently, but we want to turn things around. We are fully aware of our strength and that it’s not being reflected right now.

“At the start we had only one game per week, whereas now there are three. It’s just a question of getting used to it, but still represents a new difficulty compared to last season.

“Of course we are still in the Scudetto race. Why wouldn’t we be? We are Roma. We have no reason to fear anyone.

“I tell the fans to stand by us, because we’re not letting anything slide. Even applause at the end of the game when things haven’t gone as well gives us so much strength for the future. We can face this future together and want to repay them with something like a trophy.

“It’s not just the fans who are hungry for silverware. Everyone knows a trophy here is worth 10 elsewhere.”

Florenzi is proving his versatility this season, playing as part of an attacking trident, in midfield or even as a right-back.

“Where do I hope to be in five years? Still here! It’s wonderful to sign a contract extension with the club I have always supported. I hope to always do better and see what the future brings us.

“It’s natural that the native Romans feel more pressure in this team and can sense what the fans are feeling too. I want to tell the supporters to stay calm and not let go, just as we won’t.”
