The Italian Under-21 captain, also capped at full level by his country, joined the Premier League side in the summer.

However, after reports that Roma made an unsuccessful bid to sign him, his agent has now admitted that the Viola were keen in the past.

“There was a possibility that Santon could have moved to Fiorentina, but the club couldn’t sign a player who Inter wanted to make a big profit on,” Renzo Contratto told Radio Toscana.

“I hope that the Viola could renew their interest in Santon in the future, giving him the opportunity to play in Italy again, even if he is very happy in England right now.”

Santon, 20, cost Newcastle a reported £5.3m.
