Fiorentina are reportedly ahead of Roma in the race for Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira and confident of clinching a deal next week.

The Uruguay international was not even on the bench for Saturday’s Charity Shield win on penalties against Liverpool.

That was a further sign that coach Mikel Arteta does not see Torreira as part of his plans, so a return to Serie A seems likely after spells at Pescara and Sampdoria.

According to La Nazione newspaper, Fiorentina are confident they can secure the 24-year-old over the next few days.

It is believed to be €8m for the season-long loan, with option to buy for a further €18m.

Roma remain in the running, but unless they raise their bid to counter the Viola, then it seems as if he’s heading for the Stadio Franchi.

Torino had also been interested, especially as he already worked with coach Marco Giampaolo at Sampdoria, but the cost of the operation is beyond their budget.
