The Federal Court of Appeal have released a statement explaining why Jose Mourinho’s two-match suspension was upheld following his touchline spat with fourth official Marco Serra.

The Portuguese coach was shown a red card during Roma’s defeat to Cremonese after an argument between him and the fourth official, who was reportedly disrespectful to Mourinho when asked about a missed foul.

Mourinho and his staff were incensed by the situation and he went to the referee’s dressing room after the match to further protest his case. In this confrontation, the Roma coach highlighted how Serra was from Turin and that the club’s next game was Juventus, a comment that did not go down well.

The FIGC released a statement today explaining why Mourinho’s appeal against the two-game ban was rejected, noting how the documents submitted by the club “did not offer certain evidence to overturn the decision, particularly with respect to the assessment of the conduct of Mr. Mourinho.”

The statement highlights how both Mourinho’s touchline spat with Serra and the argument in the dressing room after full time were taken into account. It was also noted that this decision was based off the referee’s report and isn’t tied to the investigation into Serra’s conduct.

  1. The suspension was based upon the report of the Referee who sent off Mourinho at the behest of the fourth man who has been suspended for his conduct towards Mourinho. So they are admitting there was no basis to withhold the suspension.
