Lorenzo Pellegrini is working towards making a return to action in time for Roma’s Europa League Round of 16 second leg against Real Sociedad on Thursday evening.

According to reports from Gianluca Di Marzio, the Giallorossi captain will wear a protective helmet to prevent any further damage to the head injury he sustained in the first leg of the Europa League tie.

Pellegrini was withdrawn an hour into the first round of the tie against the LaLiga outfit following a nasty clash of heads with Igor Zubeldia.

The collision left Pellegrini with blood pouring from his head and required 30 stitches after the game to seal the wound.

The 26-year-old underwent a CT scan at the Villa Stuart clinic in Rome and was kept in overnight for observation.

Following a negative result, Pellegrini was discharged and allowed to continue his recovery at home.

After undergoing medical checks on Monday morning, it has been confirmed that Roma’s influential midfielder could be in line to return in time for Thursday evening.

Pellegrini was not involved with the squad during Roma’s 4-3 loss to Sassuolo at the Stadio Olimpico , with Leonardo Spinazzola called into the starting line-up in his absence.

As per the report, Pellegrini is “working hard” to make himself available to Jose Mourinho for the second leg against Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena.

Pellegrini is a crucial cog in Mourinho’s Europa League plans, with three goals and three assists to his name from eight games in the competition so far this season.
