Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini hopes Euro 2016 can provide “joy” after terrorist attacks in Paris.

The European Championships have been confirmed for France next summer, despite the horrific attacks on the capital city which left over 100 dead on Friday night.

“We started to get the news after the game against Belgium,” Chiellini recalled in a Press conference ahead of the Romania friendly.

“We started to get the news after the game against Belgium,” Chiellini recalled in a Press conference ahead of the Romania friendly.

“We watched what happened with dismay. We saw the clip with [Patrice] Evra [where a bomb explodes during the France-Germany match], and I think they didn’t even realise [what was happening] at that time.

“I was struck by the fact that Germany slept in the dressing room, it made us understand the situation.

“Hopefully it will be an important warning for the event in June, we hope to experience the Euros with joy.”
