The Rossoneri have targeted the Argentine as a back-up should they fail to sign primary objective Carlos Tevez from Manchester City in January.

The Sicilian club are ready to deprive themselves of the former Barcelona man, but only if they get the youngster in return.

El Shaarawy, part-owned by Genoa, moved to San Siro in the summer but the 19-year-old has been limited to just 198 minutes of action so far.

Genoa recently admitted that they and Milan may decide to loan him to a smaller club, who could offer him more playing time, after Christmas.

El Shaarawy, an attacking midfielder who can also be used in a wide role, is, on paper at least, a good fit for the tactics of Catania boss Vincenzo Montella.
