Inter defender Denzel Dumfries is ‘looking forward’ to playing at the World Cup with the Netherlands and would be happy to meet Lautaro Martinez and Joaquin Correa’s Argentina.

Dumfries is one of the four Serie A players called up by Louis van Gaal for Qatar 2022.

“I’m looking forward to it,” the Dutch full-back told NOS.

“The World Cup is the most important competition and it’s a dream to be involved, an honour. Van Gaal was very clear about trying to win it, we are working hard and we are faithful.

“It’s strange not to see Italy, but there will be seven Inter players.”

Among them, his teammates Lautaro Martinez and Joaquin Correa, part of Argentina’s squad. Dumfries admitted he’d like to meet them in Qatar.

“We’ve talked about it, it would be nice,” he said.

“It’s been a while since our national team did well in the knock-out phase and everyone knows us as a country with quality footballers.”

Dumfries briefly spoke about Inter’s campaign so far highlighting how ‘lack of consistency’ affected them in the first 15 games of the season.

The Nerazzurri secured a 3-2 win away at Atalanta in the final match of the year, but find themselves 11 points below table leaders Napoli with 10 victories and five defeats.

Dumfries, 26, has two goals and three assists in 20 appearances at a club level this season. His contract at the Stadio Meazza runs out in 2025.
