Italian journalist Matteo Marani praises Milan and explains why Gigio Donnarumma’s exit was a turning point for the Rossoneri.

The 23-year-old joined PSG as a free agent after the end of his contract with Milan last summer. The Serie A giants replaced him with Mike Maignan from Lille and the France international has filled the Italy international’s shoes.

“Letting Donnarumma leave was a turning point for Milan,” said Sky Sport Italia’s deputy director Matteo Marani, as quoted by Tuttomercatoweb.

“When they decided to let him leave and sign Maignan, they signalled that the club is superior to everyone, even to their best player. It was a clear message for everyone.”

Milan are master of their fate in Serie A title race, but face three key games

The Rossoneri are now the Serie A table leaders with a three-point lead over Napoli. Inter sit four points behind their city rivals with a game in hand. With nine games remaining before the end of the season, Il Diavolo dreams of winning its first Scudetto since 2011.

“Milan didn’t feel the pressure against Empoli,” Marani continued.

“It was a heavy victory and Milan are the team that plays the best brand of football among the top four. Perhaps, there are better teams, but their mental strength is unique.”

Donnarumma, on the other hand, is having a tough time in Paris and is under fire following a mistake in the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 against Real Madrid. PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino defended the Italy international, saying Karim Benzema had fouled him.

  1. Turning point, wake up call, insert euphemism here. It was an ugly divorce, but if it results in a 19th scudetto, I’ll gladly take it.
