Didier Deschamps refused to confirm or deny if Milan veteran Olivier Giroud would be included in the France squad for the upcoming World Cup.

The 35-year-old Frenchman was called up for this international break by Deschamps and played a key role in their 2-0 Nations League win over Austria earlier this week, scoring a goal and providing an assist. Giroud has been vital for Stefano Pioli and Milan this season after the injuries suffered by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ante Rebic and Divock Origi.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of France’s clash with Denmark, Deschamps discussed the qualities of Giroud but refused to give a clear answer regarding his inclusion in the World Cup squad.

“There is a lot of support for Oliver and he deserves it I don’t involve the players in the squad selection, it’s not their role. Good for Oliver.

“Now it’s up to Oliver to maintain this level. I know what he is capable of, he has more affinity with the players than others and he has always had a collective spirit. I will give my answer in early November.”

The 35-year-old Giroud has a storied career with the France national team, making 112 caps since his debut in 2011. The Milan veteran has scored 48 goals in that time and was a key part of their World Cup winning squad in 2018, starting in all but one of their games as they went on to lift the trophy.
