Gianluigi Donnarumma thanked the Azzurri fans for their support after he returned to the San Siro for the Nations League win over England.

The Italian shot stopper spent six years in the Lombardy capital after progressing through the latter parts of the club’s youth system, making his first team debut at the age of 16. Donnarumma went on to make 251 appearances for Milan, keeping 88 clean sheets and conceding 265 goals in that time, before leaving when his contract expired last year.

Donnarumma was infamously booed by the Italy fans when he returned to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza last year. The Milan fans were not happy with the nature of his departure and subsequent move to Paris Saint-Germain, making their feelings clear.

In last night’s 1-0 win over England, the 23-year-old Italian goalkeeper was not booed and instead received a warmer reception, something he clearly appreciated. Writing on his Instagram page after the victory, Donnarumma thanked the fans for their support.

“An important victory, a stadium full of passion on the pitch and in the stands. Thank you Milan, thank you San Siro.”
