Alessandro Del Piero reveals he could have signed for Milan before he joined Juventus, as he previews tomorrow’s game.

The forward went on to become a Juventus legend, winning eight Scudetti and the Champions League, as well as becoming the club’s all-time top goalscorer and appearance maker.

“Milan tried to get me in ’92, before I moved to Juve,” Del Piero revealed in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Agradi, Padova’s sporting director, asked for a lot of money so I went to Juve. But [Milan President Silvio] Berlusconi, I’ll tell you one thing: I’m a free agent now so if you still want me…

“Seriously, I’m glad he holds me in high esteem. I’d have loved to play with some of the Rossoneri’s players, but fortunately I did so with the national team.

“It would’ve been nice to partner [Marco] Van Basten for the class that he had and the way he played the role of centre-forward.

“[Arrigo] Sacchi’s Milan were a reference point for everyone. Everyone understood very clearly that Milan had changed football. The team was very compact, very organised.

“The three Dutchman [Van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard] were like men against boys.”

The World Cup winner then looked ahead to tomorrow’s match, and perhaps unsurprisingly predicts a Bianconeri victory.

“The rivalry is a little bit like the one between [Roger] Federer and [Rafael] Nadal in tennis. There’s the desire to win and to fight, but always with great respect.

“Inzaghi? He looks like he’s aged, but that normal. In Italy it’s difficult for coaches. You have to relate to a lot of people, while carrying your own ideas, it’s not easy.

“My prediction? 2-1 to Juve.”
