The Italian’s future in the capital was placed into doubt and it is understood that the Old Trafford outfit did make an offer for him.

“Had I been in the shoes of De Rossi then I would have joined Manchester United,” Capello, who coached the 30-year-old in the past, told Fox Sport.

“I would have wanted to go to a club where the ambition is very high.

“A few months ago [Manchester United boss] David Moyes asked me for an opinion of the player, an opinion which was positive.”

The Giallorossi opted to keep Capitan Futuro and he has been one of the many success stories at the Olimpico so far this term.

“Roma have had a competitive squad for the last three years, but, for one reason or another, they haven’t been able to express themselves,” Russia boss Capello added.

“Coach Rudi Garcia, despite having a weaker squad on paper, has given the team some pride. They are now helping each other on the pitch.”

The 67-year-old, who spent five years on the Roma bench before his 2005 move to Juventus, also revealed that he was wanted again in Rome.

“I was contacted by Roma and by other important clubs during last season, but I was under contract to Russia,” he explained.

“The Scudetto? Juventus are still the side to beat, but I see that Napoli are in the race too.”
