Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini held contract talks with Daniele De Rossi earlier on Monday.

The two men met at the club's Trigoria headquarters this morning to discuss their options for the future.

De Rossi is only contracted to the club until June 2012 which means Roma will have to extend his deal or risk losing him for nothing next year.

While both the player and the club want to prolong their relationship, there may be problems agreeing terms.

The World Cup winner currently earns over €4m a season, but reports suggest that the Giallorossi want him to accept a pay cut.

The Roman, born on 24 July 1983, is a product of his hometown club's youth academy.

De Rossi, who made his debut for the outfit in 2001, has played in 249 League games, scoring 29 goals.

Roma boss Luis Enrique wants De Rossi at his disposal this term after being impressed by him in training.

"He is one of the most important players around, not only at Roma, but in Italy and the world," the new Giallorossi tactician noted. "For me he is fundamental, a key element.

"I already knew him as a player, but I like him even more now that I know him as a person," added the tactician.

"It's nice to see his hunger to win, but also how he listens. He works with humility to place himself at the disposal of the squad.

"I hope he feels a part of this project."
