Antonio Candreva admits Inter are struggling, but “fortunately our destiny remains in our hands” for a top four finish this season.

The Nerazzurri were top of the Serie A table in December, but are without a win in eight rounds and were held 1-1 at San Siro by Crotone on Saturday.

“We struggled for these two months and everyone can see that,” confessed the winger at an awards ceremony.

“Perhaps we deserved more against Udinese, but from there on we lost our self-esteem. It was a negative performance at Sassuolo.

“Fortunately, the other challengers for a Champions League place are also slowing down. Our destiny remains in our hands.”

Lazio are in third place on 46 points, followed by Inter on 45, Roma 44, Sampdoria 38, Atalanta 36 and Milan 35.

Candreva is often jeered by the crowd at San Siro, but his effort and work-rate are never in doubt.

“I wouldn’t be me if I just did the bare minimum. It is in my nature to always try something more difficult. There are always dark moments, but we must always believe in ourselves and never lose the enthusiasm of playing football.”

It’s not just with Inter that the winger had dark moments, as he was also in the Italy side that lost the 2018 World Cup play-offs with Sweden.

“We didn’t expect this sporting bereavement, and we damaged our country. It’s everyone’s fault, because we did get humiliated. Now we have to look forward, unfortunately it’s difficult to change track during a game.”
