Sofyan Amrabat’s Morocco are through to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals in Qatar after eliminating Rafael Leao’s Portugal, but Bari striker Walid Cheddira was sent off.

This is the first time ever that a team from Africa will participate in the World Cup semi-finals, having already shocked Belgium and Spain, decided by a towering Youssef En-Nesyri header just before half-time.

Cheddira had a real nightmare when he came off the bench, as first he wasted two big chances – wandering offside on one of them – then received two yellow cards in the matter of moments for futile fouls.

He had already made history with his presence as the first Serie B player to participate in a World Cup quarter-final since Gheorghe Hagi represented Brescia and Romania against Switzerland in 1994.

It means Cheddira will be suspended when Morocco play the semi-final against either France or England.

There will be Serie A representation from Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, who had another simply magnificent performance for Morocco, and Sampdoria’s Abdelhamid Sabiri.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos was criticised for his choices, though, not introducing Cristiano Ronaldo until the 51st minute and Milan star Rafael Leao until the 69th.

Leao created a huge opportunity for Portugal deep into stoppages, his cross nodded wide at the back post by Pepe.

  1. most thrilling world cup since 98, and I believe Hakimi Morrocco would have something to say, even though I’m rooting for Inter players in Argentina and Croatia. Inter always have representative in world cup final!!
