Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella insists “I’ve never talked about the market” and hopes to swap shirts with Milan’s Patrick Cutrone this weekend.

Barella was a reported target for the likes of Juventus and Roma before signing a contract extension until 2022 with Cagliari, and the starlet is keen to succeed Gianfranco Zola as football’s next great Sardinian.

“I’ve never talked about the market,” he told Tuttomercatoweb.

“I’m only thinking about playing and improving. I have the dream of becoming an important Sardinian around the world, like Fabio Aru, Gigi Datome and Gianfranco Zola. They’ve become my role models in sport.

“New contract? Of course, we celebrated it with a family meal, but I also gave a gift to myself and the same to my agent.

“Milan? We have to play like Juventus in keeping mistakes to a minimum, be our best in taking chances and always be focused.

“Milan are a great team. We have our eyes on Bonaventura but above all at Cutrone, who embodies the spirit of Gattuso. I’ll exchange shirts with him.”
