Cagliari defender Davide Astori is being touted as a possible replacement for Philippe Mexes at Roma.

Mexes revealed on Wednesday that he is leaving Roma after "seven beautiful years" once his contract expires at the end of this season.

Roma have been strongly criticised for letting the France international's existing deal run down.

Mediaset understands Astori is Roma's No 1 choice for the position.

The 24-year-old is part-owned by Milan and it looked as though he would move to San Siro this summer.

However, Mexes' prospective transfer to Milan has thrown a spanner in the works and it now looks as though Astori will be a makeweight.

Astori recently made his debut for Italy against the Ukraine in Kiev and was sent off.

Roma are also said to have an interest in Benfica's Luisao, Fenerbahce's Diego Lugano, Sampdoria's Daniele Gastaldello and Parma's Cristian Zaccardo.
