Fiorentina director Giancarlo Antognini believes Coach Paulo Sousa pulled-off “a masterstroke” against Juventus.

The Viola beat their most-hated rivals 2-1 last night, dominating the match for most of the 90 minutes.

“Special credit has to go to Paulo Sousa,” Antongini, a Fiorentina legend, told Radio 1.

“He pulled-off a bit of a masterstroke by moving the midfielder [Carlos] Sanchez into defence, that’s where the game was won.

“Could he leave? There’s always that worry with good Coaches, it’s an issue but we hope he stays. Right now he’s the Coach.”

The match saw the Curva Fiesole display a huge banner in tribute to Antognini.

“I have to thank the Viola fans for their affection, and emphasise the performance the team put in against Juventus. There’s an antipathy toward Juventus in Florence, which has its roots in my time.

“Fiorentina have re-opened the title race, Juventus are still favourites but Napoli and Roma have been reinserted.

“Yesterday, Neapolitan and Giallorossi fans were cheering for us.

“Fiorentina? Fiorentina already have a bit of a European dimension, but it’s not easy to bridge the gap to the richest clubs.

“With a little time though, we can get into the position to win a competition.”
